So Inkigayo has mandated a new system for all idols which will go in affect this year starting July 15th and they’re not the only ones that made changes in their countdown shows either. MBC’s Music Core discontinued their own ranking system a long time ago and SBS will be following along with Inkigayo. Producers commented with this stated saying,
“Instead of rankings, what’s more important is K-Pop’s popularity growing throughout the world and continuing the exciting atmosphere. This decision has been decided with many discussions. We don’t see any particular meaning towards the rankings. On other hand, we will continue to ensure that enjoying the music is the purpose of the show; we will be changing it with this concept.”
They also added,
“There are many talented K-Pop stars in the music industry right now. We have previously used the system of stage performances by the singers who release new songs, and now we will try experimenting to bring more special stages and a variety of collaboration stages. We will try to show a variety of performances so that the viewers will be interested and enjoy the show in the future.”
The only music program left on a major broadcasting network with the ranking system is KBS’s Music Bank. However, Mnet’s M! Countdown still gives an award to the first place winner as well. But in my opinion I do understand what the producers are trying to do; make it more fun with the audience. It’s about introducing KPOP and talent, not just on popularity on votes. But what do you guys think about the new changes?
