“Dedicated to the young Werther addicted to Facebook.”
This song was written for Rainie Yang by Soda Green’s lead singer Wu Ching-feng. Wu Ching-feng was inspired after watching the movie 少年歌德的煩惱(Goethe!). The title of the song, and the inspiration for the movie, comes from a semi-autobiographical book The Sorrows of Young Werther 少年維特的煩惱 by Goethe published in 1774 which made Goethe an overnight sensation. The story line follows the story of a young boy and unrequited love.
The MV for the song revolves around the widespread use of Facebook to post and, increasingly commonly, to notify the other person involved in the relationship of a change of status. Rainie Yang herself does not have a personal Facebook and keeps in touch with her friends through texting and calling and states that she does not feel at all out of touch, preferring the more “grounded” traditional methods of communication.
